Branding and Content
We will work hard to understand your branding, telling the world who you are…what your core brand values are, what you do best and what your “brand archetype” is. We will help you broadcast your message with conviction and be compelling, so that your clients can resonate with you. You must try to resonate with your audience and keep your visitors engaged.
The world wide web
Nowadays people look online to find answers and solutions to their every day problems. If a consumer needs an emergency plumber, or a support group to lose weight, or increasingly to buy a silver coffee maker, they instinctively now go to the search engines.
Businesses can solve these problems. Whether they cut your hair or fix your water supply or provide you with a Landlord & Tenant agreement, someone who needs these services will likely type something like “plumber Wimbledon” into the search engine box. When the almighty Google tells that person that you are one of the best plumbers in Wimbledon – well now you have some real credibility, and with it the potential to increase your revenue exponentially.
The bottom line is if you aren’t on the first page of Google, you’re missing out – & specifically to one of your competitors. Page one of Google is where countless people are looking for your services. They will type in all sorts of different phrases to solve their problem (or indulge their desires).
Our research tools shed light on just how much business this actually is. Starting with an analysis of just how many people are online searching for what your business does, you will now have real data from which to make an informed assessment about how much new business our SEO can potentially bring you.
What is a SERP?
You’ve all seen a Search Engine Results Page (SERP) hundreds of times. There’s a different one for each “Keyword”. Google wants to give people useful and meaningful results – it’s in their best interests to do so – and of course it really understands how people interact with the internet and with websites. Google takes numerous factors into account to determine its SERPs.
Our job is then to optimise these myriad of factors that the search engines look for to decide their rankings. So amongst other things we will look at your content, some technical issues on your website and how popular your site is on third party sites.
SERPs differ in the way they present information in a variety of ways. Some will list just websites, some will include videos and social media listings and others will include map listings. It isn’t rocket science to see that using different forms of internet properties increases the chances of your customers finding you, & ultimately contacting you. So, of course, where it makes sense we will use more than just one type of “internet property”.
A central key is to make sure that your actual website is performing well – by which we mean that certain technical criteria are taken care of, and that your content is both relevant and effectively structured having due regard to our market research. Without appropriate research, articles and videos and sales copy may simply miss their intended mark altogether.
Algorithms, Filters and Penalties
Perhaps one of the worst aspects of this new Search Engine Optimisation profession is just how devastating poor practices can be. It’s comparatively rare if you hire a mediocre professional in another field to end up in a significantly worse position as a result of that “professional’s” activities which after all you’ve paid for.
It has been known for a well-meaning web designer to build you a pretty looking new site, only to end up destroying all the links you had going to your site. Ouch!
If your previous SEO agency has been too aggressive, and not followed good practice, then you may well suffer as a result. Google is continually improving its ability to see through “spammy work” and poor quality content. Periodically Google comes up with an update which penalises certain sites.
Links to your sites are a fundamental aspect of SEO success. These can be viewed as votes – if you get plenty of “votes” from other sites then it would, on the face of it, appear that your site is a good one. But of course this is only a small part of the story.
Some SEO consultants might get you a whole load of low quality spammy links from India or the Philippines. Perhaps you might not get you into trouble, but will they really get you results?
Link building is a touchy subject. Do it wrong and the results will be worse than useless. But if you understand the nature of the internet and do things properly, then things can be very, very different and with a good link profile you will end up with high quality visitors for a fraction of the price you would otherwise pay for straight advertising on Google.
To help you understand links, here is a quick history lesson. Try to time travel back a few years to when Google was in its infancy.……
- Once upon a time people began to understand the value of links.
- Website 1 and Website 2 are in competition for the Keyword “best X in London” (the Search Engine Results Page” or “SERP”) where X might be “plastic surgeon” / “corporate lawyer” / “emergency plumber” / “children’s book illustrator” or whatever.
- Website 1’s “London SEO Expert” goes out and buys 1,000 spammy links from somebody in India, and hey presto Website 1 gets to number one.
- Then Website 2’s “London SEO Expert” goes out and buys 1,500 spammy links from somebody in China. Hey presto, Website 2 gets to number one in the SERP.
- So Website 1’s SEO Expert retaliates by buying another 2,000 spammy links and gets back to number one.
- We now have a parallel to a Cold War arms race.
- Several weeks have passed…both websites have thousands of rubbish links from Chinese escort agencies, Indian blogs and muscle building forums. Not only this but 99% of the anchor texts say “best X in London”. To say that this is statistically improbable is the understatement of the century.
- Finally Google gets round to understanding how this nonsense plays out, changes its algorithm and overnight both sites get hit with penalties, and disappear from page 1 into the nether regions.
Quite simply what works today may not work tomorrow.
Woe betide you if your SEO consultant is stuck behind the times….and if they are really behind the times, then ultimately they will do you more harm than good.
The Google Penguin or Panda can really bite.
But these penalties may not be terminal. If you are suffering from spammy work that is below Google’s quality standards, then with some forensic insight and some patience we may be able to get your ranking back. It is detailed work and it can be well worth the effort trying to get Google’s favour back again. In the case of Penguin penalties we would look closely at your links, and in the case of Panda penalties we focus more closely on the content to ensure a good user experience.
Google is starting to roll out what it calls the “semantic web”. We will be fully supplying this “data about data” for all of our clients to future proof their sites. As Google’s patents indicate, this is where the web is headed. So you can rest easy in the knowledge that your sites will be ahead of the game with our semantic optimisation.
Basic bread and butter SEO work
We play by Google’s Rules. Google employs countless people with PhDs in Mathematics and all sorts of other disciplines. It is evolving all the time and whilst it is undoubtedly very clever indeed, there are times (since is it a bot where you have to treat it like it is a 7 year old child, and tell it in very clear terms exactly who and what you are). But having said that, the fact is that the Google bot has a great deal more resources available than we do! Accordingly we pay the Google bot a lot of deserved respect!
Tickle the underbelly of the algorithm and you are off to the races.
When you have carved out your place in Google, don’t forget that there is so much more available in the online world than just this. Let’s not forget Facebook, You Tube, Instagram, Amazon, Shopify and the entire mobile marketing world.
What to expect from a London SEO Expert Consultant?
Well your SEO agency needs to have some flexibility and intuition for one thing. As we have emphasised there is no one one size fits all A – Z push-button blueprint that applies to each and every business. Of course there are some solid building blocks that we all need to take into account, but even with these there is quite a degree of creativity in how this building block tasks are undertaken.
What works for some, may very well not work for others.
Your SEO agency needs creativity, patience and the confidence to do things right – to not take shortcuts. We prefer sleeping soundly at night having read and inwardly digested the Google patents rather than trying to outsmart Google (a short term strategy at best).
Also don’t forget that Search Engine Optimisation is not just about getting onto the first page. It’s also about making the customer user experience so much better (thereby increasing your chances of “converting” a “visitor” into a “paying customer”.
Some questions for you to ponder, if you are not sure
The art and science of SEO is designed to get you more traffic, and therefore to help you make more money. So to get the lion’s share of this available traffic, and to dominate your competitors, there is work involved. But it’s a fun and creative journey.
So here are some serious questions for you to consider:
1 Do you really want to take your business to the next level, and beyond?
2 Are you willing to make a serious investment in your business?
3 Do you have the infrastructure to cope with inevitable growth?
4 Are you committed to doing whatever it takes?
Understand this: there is a commitment involved. Others may pop up and want to take that number one listing off you. So we need to make a plan, and yes rest assured we are here to do the heavy lifting for you if you want, but it is a marathon not a sprint. To be in for the long haul we will need to need to be prepared to do certain things from time to time, even after you have attained your coveted number one ranking.
You need to stay on top of your game. Novak Djokovic doesn’t get to dominate Grand Slams by resting on his laurels and stopping training and letting his fitness deteriorate. Quite the contrary, a top tennis professional probably needs to improve and raise his or her game by 5% every year just to stay still. Once you are top, a little of bit of ticking over on the SEO, and maintaining your social media standards will go a very long way.
